Fly east, young bat

I just got back from spending four days back east in Springfield, Mass., attending the Springfield mineral show, where my parents' mineral collection was being shown as a memorial event for my father. Apparently this mineral show is probably the third largest in the nation, with about 9500 attendees.

That was neat. A lot of folks seemed really impressed by the collection, and the personal historical notes my mom put into the displays went over very well. It's funny how much of an ego boost it can be when something my parents did impresses folks, when I had little to do with.

It's amusing how much a mineral show is like other conventions (of completely different genres) I've been to. You have many of the same things in different proportions... You have the dealers room (very large in the mineral show's case), presentation panels (just a few), art displays, and most significantly a sense of community. People were wandering around meeting old friends, telling stories, and hanging out. Very familiar.

Saturday, my brother's family and I slipped off to take the kids to the local roller coaster park, Six Flags New England. That was fun. We started off by taking a coaster called Superman. One mile long, 77 MPH, with a huge initial drop into a mist filled tunnel. Eek. Scared myself right good with that one. I was totally not expecting it to be so extreme. I would have liked to have ridden it again, though. We rode a lot of coasters, but none of the others were as impressive. My sister-in-law and I did later scare ourselves on one of the wooden coasters, but that was because it looked like it was falling apart, and the ride was excessively rough, throwing the car against the safety rail numerous times. That one literally gave me a headache.

Overall, it was a great weekend. I didn't even have any hassles at the airports, though spending 6 hours in cramped plane seats wasn't fun. I did get a lot of coding done on my flight back, though.

Oh, hey, hi Vision! Been a long time. I've not been up to much, I'm afraid, 'cept the usual coding things. At least, thats what I remember doing. :) I've been out of RPG gaming for the most part for a few years.

Ahh, same here, haven't done the RPG thing in ages. These days, most of my time is spent blowing stuff up in FPS games, NeoPets, and surfing my fave webcomix. ^_^

Scarborough rock show.
Now you've got me all nostalgic about the annual show put on by the local gem and mineral club };>.

Some very impressive stuff there. I have a big artificial crystal of silicon carbide from the show that graced the top of my piano for a few years, and numerous other knicknacks. I have to go back there some time }:>.
