Lightning and thunder over San Jose! Yayyy!
Lightning over San Jose
I took several 30 second exposures with my Canon 10D digital SLR on a tripod, chose the best pictures with and without lightning, then cancelled them in Photoshop to remove the orange city sky-glow. The effect around the trees was a little funky, but I cleaned it up a bit by over-painting the hue to match the background. I probably could do a lot better if I worked at it a while, but I was happy to do this well. A much larger version of this picture now graces my folder of desktop backgrounds.

Awesome. We were hoping the big storm would get dragged down here, but it flew over Onci instead.

Great picture!

Nice! Actually, the first thing I thought of when I saw that shot was that it would make a great wallpaper. I don't suppose that you have a link to the image in 1600x1200 so I could download it, do you?

My desktop is a 3:2 aspect ratio, so here's a link to an 1800x1200 version.

It's a bit grainy, as my shots were done in 800 ISO. On the plus side, that allowed the detail in the fine bits of the lightning. On the minus side, the rest of the image is pretty grainy. Especially after diffing two images.

In retrospect, I think I should have instead done this as a single shot at ISO 200 or 400, after setting my white balance to the orange sky-glow color.

Not a problem. I can work with that.

Thanks. Very nice work, as I said.

*grins* Kitty has some digicam movies that she grabbed of the storm last night -- was over the hills for us, and hung around for about an hour without the rain part until later. Glad to see it made it down to you!

So that was lightning I saw on the horizon on the way home last night. It was far enough away that I never heard any thunder, and there were only wisps of cloud over Sunnyvale.

pretty...
Thats a really nice shot. ^.^; heh.. My brother David wandered in today, and looked, commenting that it was a nice shot. (we are the Drakes. you have a hive mind. fear.) anyways. my imediate comment was that it was taken by the revar. @_@ he nodded sagely. and headed off for work. it just struck me just now to comment about it. i refer to her as "the revar" every time i am meaning to refer to her with no room for misunderstanding. @.@ and in turn, they understand i mean the original. heh. it sounds a bit weird in common conversation tho.... n.n
