Tsunami Madness

One of my co-workers is a surfer, and related to me a story today that just makes me wonder at the level of common sense among people.

Apparently, he was out surfing when the 7.0 Earthquake happened off the shore of California, triggering off Tsunami watches all up and down the coast. As he came in to shore, all un-knowing, he noticed a lot of people standing on the shore, watching the ocean.

So he asked them why was up, and they replied, "Don't you know? We're waiting for the Tsunami! It should be here about now! This is a great spot to watch it from!"

Spectators. Standing on the shore. Waiting for a Tsunami to come in.

To quote Ripley from the movie Aliens, "Did IQ's suddenly drop around here while I was gone?"

You would think, after having it repeated for half the winter, of about a quarter of a million people dying from a Tsunami, that folks wouldn't be anywhere near the shore after a Tsunami alert.

I feel sorry for lemmings. They don't know any better when someone pushes them off a cliff.

Humans standing on shore waiting for a tsunami should be put on suicide watch.

Too bad it didn't actually happen. The local average IQ would have probably doubled...

Oh, that is the best. You realize, of course, that this is going into my "Why California People Are Just Plain Crazy" file!

P.S. To a Californian who is least nuts of any I've met there, can you help me figure out why webmail doesn't like any other email accounts I set up?

If the tsunami had rolled around in just then... Your co-worker would have been surfing for his life. };)

One of the Pournelle books had a scenario like this happening after a comet impact };>. I don't think the surfer was *quite* skillful enough in that case =^.^=.
