That was eastern Washington, actually. Though I'm seeing much the same in Montana.

How do people live all their lives with such soul-sucking lack of geography without losing sanity?

Yes. Very flat.

Ironically, I spent all of yesterday surrounded by nothing BUT trees; tremendously big trees in Yosemite and the Mariposa Grove.

That's reminiscent of Saskatchewan. The drive from Regina to Saskatoon is a long, mind-numbing journey towards infinity, save the occasional gopher and potholes capable of swallowing small cars whole.

Driving on a clear night is incredible though. With so little light pollution, the stars are simply stunning. Last fall I had a chance to pull over without any other cars in sight, and it felt like standing on a different world altogether. The silence was beautiful.
