The Two Towers

Yesterday I woke up dreaming that my home had just taken a direct hit by a nuclear bomb. That tweaked with my mind for most the day. I figured that it was something symbolic about my general malaise, lately, where I've been thinking that the world was going to hell in a hand basket.

Then, this morning, I get woken up to news that four planes had been hijacked near simultaneously, and two were flown into the World Trade center towers, and a third into the Pentagon.

Oh. My. Ghod.

More people died today in those two towers, than live in my entire home town, including outlying communities. The war hawks are already circling, and I can't disagree with them.

The tremendous loss of live, and the destruction are just the first tragedy of all this, though.

The next tragedy we'll inflict on ourselves.

Just you wait and see... There'll be anti-terrorism bills introduced left and right in the months to come. And one by one, our civil rights will be pruned. With the blessing of the general public.

I bet that Cryptography gets heavy limitations placed on it real soon.
Facial recognition software will be hooked up to cameras all over.
I bet microphones will become almost as pervasive as cameras are now.

These are just a few things off the top of my head.
This is how privacy slowly erodes; in the name of the public good.

...

Hmmmm. I wonder if the upcoming Tolkien movie "The Two Towers" will have to change its name.

If you're not guilty, you have nothing to worry about. (Insert eerie music here.)

Frankly I'm SICK of all these people making their predictions about what will happen. You're not helping the situation, and there's no way you can know.

I'm a pessimist, and even I don't think it's going to come down to this predicted police state.

Sit down, sit back, watch what happens. If things like this do begin to occur, then stand up and speak your voice. Be an American. But try to trust in your government a little, okay? For the time being, lets try to keep our little ominous dark clouds about the future to ourselves, shall we? We've enough problems at this point without thinking we're heading for The Prisoner.

Actually, I believe the government does the right thing in the majority of cases, and in many areas they do absolutely wonderful good stuff.

They just have this unfortunate track record in certain other areas... It's times when folks get distracted by "more important matters" that are the easiest time for the powers-who-be to rearrange things to suit themselves better. And that often is at the expense of the interests of fringe or minority groups.

Sometimes I hate being proven right in my suspicions.
