Even Dr. Evil would choke on this number

So, the White House just released their latest estimate on the budget deficit for this year:

$455 Billion. With a B.

For one year's deficit. And next year's deficit is expected to be about $475 Billion. But that's okay. They promise to cut that deficit in half by 2006, to about $236 Billion. By the way, previous to this year, the record high for our budget deficit was $290 Billion, in Bush Sr.'s administration.

Our National Debt is currently increasing by about $1.5 Billion a day.

Oh, and ever notice how nobody talks about the National Debt anymore? Ever wondered what it is now?

It's currently about $6,667,333,918,332 as of 2pm PST today.
That's almost $6.7 Quadrillion.
[Edit: My bad. $6.7 Trillion. I miscounted zeroes. That means the National Debt will increase by a full 6.8% this year.]

I can't even comprehend that. Good ghod. And they want to keep running up the tab?

Are you sure it's a quadrillion? I live in mortal terror of big numbers, so I don't want to say I'm certain about this... but isn't a quadrillion fifteen zeroes? I count twelve places in that number, I think it's 6.7 trillion. I could be way wrong though, I'm already scared I'm sounding like a dumbass right now. o_o

Either way, yeah, our public debt is incredibly bloated. :6

You're right. $6 Trillion. I miscounted zeroes twice. In a way, this makes it worse, as that makes the deficit a significant percentage of the debt.

I agree, our deficit is a big fat slice of an already huge debt. Our income is around two trillion dollars, so we'd have to shovel our entire GDP, without spending a cent on anything else, into the public debt for more than three years to break this thing. :6 It's grotesque, and hurts my head to think about.

Well, at least it isn't insurmountable... I guess. o_o

Yeah dude, that's $6.7 trillion. If we were in the Quadrillion range we'd be in a serious world of hurt as a nation, not that we aren't now.

Don't worry! They can just print more money and devalue the dollar! Or they can raise taxes on the average citizen while calling it a "tax cut" for the filthy rich.
