Server downtime

The server that hosts images.monocerosmedia.com (which hosts the FC2005 fursuit photos), and www.ranting-gryphon.com (which hosts 2's site), has been down since last night, apparently with a hardware failure. (Not disk related.)

The managed server support group will be getting the replacement card in probably no earlier than tomorrow morning. There's not much we can do to speed this up, sadly, except look for another host with better support in the future, or that allows us physical access. It'll be hard to match the price-per-bandwidth, though. You get what you pay for, I guess.

They're well known as being a low-cost managed service host. They're great as long as you pay your bill on time and don't ever need support on the servers that you rent from them.

Managed.Com's service blows goats. The total lack of support is why I bailed for ServerBeach. Costs a little more but the support is a world better. From my experince most managed services like ServerBeach and Managed.Com won't let you have access to the boxes, you'd need to go to a full co-lo for that.

My Mangled.com expiernce goes something like this: I rent server from Managed.Com, server's disk dies. I spend TWO DAYS trying to get somebody from Managed.com's support group on the phone. Eventually, I get a snotty piece of email from them saying, "It'll cost you $50 for us to reload the OS, more if the disk is dead." Of course the disk was dead! That's why I wanted them to replace it! But they wanted to charge me for replacing a disk in server that I was renting from them which is total bullshit and so is the notion of a $50 service fee to re-image a server with Fedora. Eventually they replaced my disk and reimaged the box for free but it was like pulling teeth. They also suck for billing and they shut my server down once when I was just a day late with my payment.

Fuck'em. ServerBeach is better.

Was each link made from two pieces, or was there fill material inside that you removed? I'm having trouble seeing how to print these in a makerbot-compatible way (though I could just be overlooking…

Nah. It'd just take a dissolvable support material and higher resolution. There are commercial 3d printers out there that can print ball bearing assemblies in one pass, fully assembled.

Nice! ^_^ I was going to be flabbergasted if you were actually able to print it as a unit, but I guess that would take antigravity.

I printed each piece individually and assembled them after some cleanup. I did print four segments at a time, though, unattached, in a 2x2 grid.
