Wet

I got as far as Chemult, Oregon last night – about 60 miles north of Klamath Falls – before I had to stop because I couldn't see the road well enough through the snow storm. So I stopped and stayed in a motel there.

Over the night, it snowed 10 inches on us. I have photos of the truck covered in snow, that I'll upload later. The lady at the motel counter said that there was a series of about ten storm fronts predicted to come through, one after the other for the next week. Also, the power went out in the middle of the night, and all the heaters are electric in the motel.

I took a loooong look at the road, decided to escape while I thought I could, put the snow chains on, and braved my way down the roads past Klamath falls. About there the snow turned to a driving rain. I took the chains off, and drove down to the town of Mt. Shasta, California, where I found out that the 5 freeway into Oregon was blocked both northbound and southbound due to mudslides. Given that that was my alternate route home, I seem to have dodged the bullet there.

It snowed on me again, going past Mt. Shasta, but I just put the truck in 4WD for a bit and made it past just fine. I'm currently sitting in a gas station parking lot in Redding, California, and it has yet to stop raining on me.

It's been a really intense winter rain, so far, and tugrik tells me that I'm about to get into the more severe part of it. Given the high winds and near horizontal rain so far, this should be interesting.

More later.
